Green turtles return to the same feeding grounds for decades, and the shallow reefs off Al Aqah have supported a stable population since conservation efforts began in the early 2000s. The coastline between Sandy Beach and Snoopy Island produces the highest encounter rates—snorkelers regularly spot turtles grazing on algae-covered rocks within three meters of the surface. Visibility depends on wind and tide. Morning outings benefit from overnight settling of sediment, while afternoon chop stirs the sand and reduces clarity to under five meters. The reef structure itself is gentle: no strong currents, minimal surge, and sandy patches between coral clusters that make navigation forgiving for beginners. Most sightings happen within 50 meters of shore. Seasonal patterns are subtle. Nesting activity on nearby beaches peaks between April and July, but the offshore population remains visible year-round because the turtles do not migrate far from their feeding zones. Water temperature stays above 24°C even in winter, so encounters are possible in any month. The Gulf of Oman's nutrient upwelling supports dense algae growth, which anchors the turtles to these specific sites. Snorkeling with turtles in Fujairah requires no special certification, but approach distance matters—UAE marine regulations prohibit contact and recommend maintaining two meters from all wildlife. Turtles surface to breathe every few minutes; patient observers see natural behavior rather than startled retreats. The reef's biodiversity extends beyond turtles: blacktip reef sharks, blue-spotted rays, and schools of fusiliers share the same habitat, particularly around the rock formations that give Snoopy Island its name.
